FashionTrends are a proposal "not a rule".

Rules Are Out, Style Is In: Why Trends Are Just Options.

Let’s be honest: keeping up with the fashion industry can feel like running on a treadmill that’s set just a little too fast. Every season, there’s a new "must-have" color, a fresh silhouette, and a shiny new aesthetic taking over your feed.

But here is the liberating truth: Fashion trends are optional menu items, not a rulebook, and sometimes are not for us or we do not need in our style of life.

Let's talk about how to take back your power, level up your style game, and stop letting the industry dictate your life.

What is the Point of Fashion Shows, Anyway?

If we aren't supposed to copy-paste runway looks into our daily lives, why do these shows even exist?

Sure, you see celebrities wearing those exact runway looks to major events, but remember: for them, it’s a specific style proposal—and often, it's just a paid fashion campaign.

For the rest of us, a fashion show is more like an art exhibition or a concept car reveal. Designers aren't telling you, "You must wear a sheer, metallic trench coat to the grocery store." They are creating a mood, pushing boundaries, and forecasting a vibe. Runway shows exist to inspire, spark creativity, and set a cultural tone. It's theater!

You are meant to take the essence of the show—maybe an interesting color pairing, a cool texture, or a unique silhouette—and translate it into your own life in a way that actually makes sense for you.

The "Color of the Year" Myth

When design councils announce the "Color of the Year," it isn't a command to dye your whole life that shade. It’s a tool to combine and complement what you already own. If the color of the year is a vibrant terracotta, you don't need a new wardrobe; maybe you just pair a terracotta scarf with the navy blazer you've owned for five years.

The exact same thing applies to your home! New interior design trends are there to give you fresh ideas for a space, not to convince you to gut your living room every spring. It’s about refreshing a space, not necessary buy, maybe just change of place some furniture and add some flowers, not a total replacement. New interior design trends are there to give you ideas.

🚫 Block out the Negative Noise

Whenever you read an article telling you to “Avoid these colors!” or claiming that a certain piece of furniture, accessory, or clothing style is “Totally OUT!”—do yourself a huge favor and ignore it.

Don't listen to the pressure to throw perfectly good things away just because a magazine said so. That is how we create useless garbage. Instead, challenge yourself to do better: complement it, combine it, or remake it. Keeping things in rotation is the ultimate style flex.

Rethink, Choose, Combine: Your Sustainability Superpowers.

Sometimes, we just get tired. Making daily decisions is exhausting, so sometimes we blindly follow a trend just because it's easier than thinking. But blind following is the enemy of your personal style, your wallet, and the planet.

We’ve all been there: we see a silhouette or a color on a celebrity or influencer we absolutely admire, and we buy it instantly. But the truth is, not every trend is meant for our specific lifestyle or silhouette—and that is totally okay!

Next time you feel the urge to hit "Add to Cart" on a passing trend, pause and rethink ask yourself these four questions to make a better choice:

  • Does this actually fit my lifestyle and silhouette? Or am I buying it for a fantasy version of myself?

  • Do I actually love the item, or do I just love it because of the person wearing it?

  • Does this actually fit my real-life lifestyle and my silhouette?

  • Can I style this in at least three different ways with what I already own?

✨ Your New Mantra: Combining is your best friend.

Mixing a vintage piece with your favorite basics, or dressing down a formal item for a casual day out, allows you to look current without hurting sustainability, your space, or your bank account.

True style isn't about how much you can buy or have. It's about how resourcefully—and confidently—you can play with what you have.
