The "7Rs of Fashion"

The "7Rs of Fashion" was introduced and popularized by Fashion Takes Action (FTA), a Canadian non-profit organization focused on sustainability in the apparel sector.

Here there are 7Rs of Fashion?

  • 1. Reduce: Purchase the essential, better quality items and stop the need for impulse purchases.

  • 2. Reuse: Extending the lifespan of clothing through thrifting, borrowing, or swapping.

  • 3. Repair: Mending, tailoring, or fixing damaged garments to extend their lifespan.

  • 4. Repurpose: Upcycling old or worn-out garments into entirely new items or accessories.

  • 5. Resell: Giving garments a second life through consignment or peer-to-peer platforms (because I am living in Iceland like Rauði Krossinn, Verzlanahöllin or Hringekjan).

  • 6. Rent: Using rental services for special occasions or fast-moving trends to avoid buying disposable clothing.

  • 7. Recycle: The final option for textiles that can no longer be worn is to ensure they are responsibly gathered and transformed into new fibers.

Rethink— an additional "R" is introduced to inspire a critical evaluation of consumption habits, the selection of sustainable brands, and prioritizing the planet over fleeting trends. This should be the foremost consideration because by thoroughly assessing what we need, why we are buying, and questioning is this truly for me?, we can make more informed product choices.

Applying the 7Rs to your own wardrobe is a great way to build a sustainable, cost-effective, and stylish closet without sacrificing your personal aesthetic.

  1. Reduce: Check your closet first. Adopt the "one-in, one-out" rule. Before buying a new item, ask yourself if you will wear it at least 30 times. Focus on timeless high-quality over trendy and avoid impulse buys: on sale doesn’t mean you need it. Ask yourself if do you truly need it? Wash less, care more: only when is necessary, use cold water, and air dry.

  2. Reuse: Shop secondhand and swap. Explore local thrift stores, vintage shops, or online platforms. Repeat your outfits.

  3. Repair Learn basic mending skills. Patch up holes early. Keep a simple sewing kit on hand to sew loose buttons, fix small tears, or hem trousers. For bigger jobs, a local tailor.

  4. Repurpose Get creative, transform old t-shirts into cleaning cloths, turn old jeans into a bag or cut frayed jeans into summer shorts, etc.

  5. Resell Instead of throwing away clothes, sell them on consignment apps or Facebook market.

  6. Rent For special occasions instead of buying, that you'll only wear once, use rental services or see in the closet of a friend.

  7. Recycle Dispose textiles properly, look for local textile recycling drop-off points. You can look if some designer accept or require for their projects, like us we need the jeans collect several and contact us ilaalistudio@gmail.com
